The Atrium Gallery was funded through an Educational Enhancement grant from the Portsmouth Public Education Foundation. The project received funding to create a gallery and host openings for students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members throughout the 2003/2004 school year. The Atrium Gallery Committee was established and met for the first time on October 22, 2003. During this meeting the grant was described, future meetings and opening dates were established and student officers were appointed.
The goals for the gallery continue to expand and for the 2004/2005 school year include executing 6 openings and visiting Gallery Night Providence. The gallery committee also plans to host educational information sessions for students (and their parents) who are planning to pursue the further their study of art.
Since the development of the gallery, we have exhibited the artwork of 176 students. By having their artwork displayed in the main lobby of the high school, students gain recognition for their efforts and skill from their teachers, school administrators and fellow classmates.
